Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted (born November 5, 1853 in Whitechapel , † January 16/17, 1927 in Hamilton Place, London ) was the founder of The Shell Transport and Trading Company , the predecessor of today's Royal Dutch Shell .

Life

His father, who was also called Marcus Samuel , ran a colonial trade in mussels ( English shell ) with the Far East. Together with his brother Samuel Samuel (1855-1934), who later founded Samuel & Co. of Yokohama and sat for the Conservative Party in Parliament, he continued the business.

In 1878 Samuel began trading kerosene for the first time . On January 19, 1881, he married Fanny Elizabeth Benjamin (* around 1858, † January 16, 1927).

When, on a shopping trip to Batumi via Constantinople in 1890 , he found that this port was full of oil tankers, it seemed to him a better deal, and he ordered eight tankers to be built. In 1892, the 5,000 t ship Murex was the first tanker to carry a load through the Suez Canal.

When oil was found in Borneo in 1897 , he set up trading stations everywhere on the sea route to the Far East and financed himself with the help of the Rothschilds . He was promoted to a Knight Bachelor degree the following year after two of his tugs had enabled the salvage of the Majestic- class battleship HMS Victorious .

From 1902 to 1903 Samuel was Lord Mayor of London . In the course of this he was raised to baronet in 1903 .

In 1903 he merged with the Dutch company Henri Deterding , which was then renamed the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company . However, due to great financial difficulties, the association was dominated by the Dutchman Wilhelm Deterding , who was chairman of the board for many years, with 60:40 . Both companies remained separate until 2005.

In 1921 he was raised to Baron Bearsted and in 1925 to Viscount Bearsted because of his services to the fuel supply of Great Britain in World War I. His collaborator Robert Waley Cohen received similar honors.
