Baron Godolphin

Baron Godolphin was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded three times, once each in the Peerage of England , the Peerage of Great Britain and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award and expiration

Sidney Godolphin, 1st Baron Godolphin

The first bestowal was in September 1684, the title of Baron Godolphin , of Rialton in the County of Cornwall in the Peerage of England for the politician Sidney Godolphin . In 1706 he was also raised to Earl of Godolphin and Viscount Rialton . When he died in 1712, his son Francis inherited him .

In 1735, the title Baron Godolphin , of Helston in the County of Cornwall in the Peerage of Great Britain was created for this very same second award . The award was made with the special note that in the absence of male descendants, this title could also be inherited by male descendants of his deceased uncle Henry Godolphin, Dean of St. Paul's. When the 2nd Earl died on January 17, 1766 without male heirs, the Earldom Godolphin, the Viscountcy Rialton and the Barony Godolphin from 1684. The Barony Godolphin from 1735 inherited his cousin Francis Godolphin, 2nd Baron Godolphin . When he died childless on May 25, 1785, this title also expired.

The third bestowal on May 14, 1832, was the title of Baron Godolphin , of Farnham Royal in the County of Buckingham in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for Lord Francis Osborne , the second son of the 5th Duke of Leeds . His grandmother was Lady Mary Godolphin, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Godolphin. When the 1st Baron died in 1850, his eldest son George inherited him , who in 1859 also inherited the title Duke of Leeds from his cousin . The baron title Godolphin remained from then on a subordinate title of the respective Duke of Leeds until both titles expired when the 12th Duke of Leeds died in 1964.
