Life

George Osborne was the eldest son of Francis Godolphin Osborne, 1st Baron Godolphin , (1777-1850) and Elizabeth Charlotte Eden (1780-1847), a daughter of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland . Osborne had an older sister, Charlotte († 1838), and three younger brothers, William (1804-1888), Sydney (1808-1889) and D'Arcy (1814-1846). His uncle was George Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds , and his grandfather, Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds .

In 1824, Osborne married Lady Harriet Emma Arundel Stewart in the British Embassy in Paris , who was the illegitimate daughter of the British statesman and diplomat Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville and Henrietta Frances Spencer and therefore maternal half-sister of the writer Caroline Lamb . They had a total of eight children: George (1828–1895), Francis George (1830–1907), Susan Georgina (1830–1903), D'Arcy (1834–1895), William (1835–1888), Emma Charlotte (1837– 1906), Charlotte (1838-1914) and Blanche (1842-1917).

His father Francis was ennobled as Baron Godolphin in 1832 , so that Osborne was allowed to prefix his name with an Hon. For The Honorable . After his father's death in 1850, he inherited his title. In 1852 his wife Harriet died. In 1859 he inherited the title of Duke of Leeds from his cousin Francis D'Arcy-Osborne, 7th Duke of Leeds , as this had no male offspring. George Godolphin Osborne died in Gogmagog Hills, Cambridgeshire in 1872 at the age of 70. His eldest son George Godolphin Osborne followed him as the 9th Duke of Leeds.
