Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, 2nd Earl Talbot

Earl Talbot is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain . The title has been awarded twice so far, in 1761 and 1784. The title of the first award expired in 1782.

The historic family seat of the Earls was Hensol Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales until 1789 .

First awards

The title was first awarded on March 19, 1761 to William Talbot, 2nd Baron Talbot of Hensol . He had inherited from his father Charles Talbot, 1st Baron Talbot of Hensol , whose title was created on December 5, 1733, and Baron Talbot of Hensol , in the County of Glamorgan , in 1737 . In 1780 he was also awarded the title of Baron Dynevor , of Dynevor in the County of Carmarthen . In contrast to the other titles mentioned above, the latter was awarded with the special addition that in the absence of male offspring it could also be passed on to his daughter Cecil Rice . All titles mentioned belong to the Peerage of Great Britain.

When the 1st earl first bestowal died in 1782 without male heirs, his earl title expired. The title Baron Dynevor fell to his daughter Cecil Rice, the title Baron Talbot of Hensol to his nephew John Talbot († 1782), the son of his younger brother John Talbot († 1756).

Second award

On July 3, 1784, the earliest dignity of John Talbot, 3rd Baron Talbot of Hensol was restored. He was elevated to the second award to Earl Talbot , of Hensol in the County of Glamorgan, and Viscount of Ingestre , in the County of Stafford . Both titles belong to the Peerage of Great Britain. Since then the title Viscount Ingestre has also been used as a courtesy title by the respective title heir. Lord Talbot obtained a royal license in 1786 that he was allowed to include the surname and coat of arms of his mother Catherine Chetwynde in his.

The third earl second bestowal inherited his Peerage of England title Earl of Shrewsbury , his Peerage of Ireland title Earl of Waterford , as well as the death of his distant relative Bertram Talbot, 17th Earl of Shrewsbury, 17th Earl of Waterford in 1856 the associated subordinate titles. The three earl dignities have since been united in personal union.
