Marquess Townshend , of Raynham in the County of Norfolk, is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

The family home of the Marquesses is Raynham Hall near Fakenham in Norfolk .

Award

The title was created on October 31, 1787 for George Townshend, 4th Viscount Townshend . He was a field marshal in the British Army , after having fought in North America in particular in the Seven Years War . He was also Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1767 to 1772 .

Subordinate title

The great-grandfather of the 1st Marquess had already been raised to Baron Townshend , of Lynn Regis in the County of Norfolk in 1681 , and a year later to Viscount Townshend , of Raynham in the County of Norfolk. Both titles are now listed as subordinate titles to the Marquess and belong to the Peerage of England .

Since the subordinate titles do not differ in their address from the actual title, the title heir derives his courtesy title from the territorial dedication of the Viscountcy and is called Viscount Raynham .

The grandfather of the 1st Viscount was made Baronet , of Raynham in the County of Norfolk, in 1617 . This dignity, which belongs to the Baronetage of England , is still carried today by the respective marquess.

Other titles

The first marquess married Charlotte Compton, 15th Baroness Ferrers of Chartley and 7th Baroness Compton in 1751 . The two titles, which belong to the Peerage of England and had been created in 1299 and 1572, respectively, were transferred to her eldest son, who later became 2nd Marquess, when she died in 1770. As Baronies by Writ , these titles can also be inherited in the female line and fell between his sisters when the 3rd Marquess died childless in 1855 in Abeyance .

The future 2nd Marquess was raised to Earl of Leicester in 1782 while his father was still alive . This title was awarded for the sixth time; it went out with the childless death of the 3rd Marquess in 1855.
