The giant tomb Barrancu Mannu (also called "Sa Tuerredda") is located near Santadi in the province of Sud Sardegna in Sardinia . The buildings called “Tumbas de los zigantes” and ( Italian Tombe dei Giganti ) in Sardu are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200-1,600 BC), the precursor culture of the Nuragic culture .

Type sequence

Type series of Sardinian-Corsican monuments

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra belong to the older northern Sardinian type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a rectangular facade made of processed and layered stone blocks, instead of monolithic steles . The giant tomb of Barrancu Mannu is a younger type of complex (with a square facade).

description

The asymmetrical, slightly conical exedra of the approximately 17.9 m long system measures 10.4 m in width. The hill is about 6.2 m wide at the end of the semicircular, covered passage. The masonry of the approximately 4.7 m high exedra consists in the middle of six layers of irregularly large, polyhedral yellow-pink granite blocks . The largest is a lintel (1.50 × 1.20 × 0.83) above the square entrance of 0.54 × 0.55 m. The right side of the exedra in the terminal is severely damaged. The sides of the exedra are lower with 2.1 m and four stone layers, or 2.6 m with five stone layers.

A small anteroom opens up immediately behind the entrance. The burial room is 10.3 m long and slightly trapezoidal in width (1.85 by 1.70 m). It consists of large, little or no machined blocks that form an interior space that is trapezoidal in cross-section. The cover consists of large, flat plates. Two holes open at the end of the corridor are from grave robbers. The megalithic complex dates from the middle or late Bronze Age.
