Barthélemy Du Pan (born August 18, 1712 in Geneva ; † January 4, 1763 there ) was a Geneva portraitist . He was active at the Dutch royal house of Orange and at the English royal house.

biography

Barthélemy du Pan, like many members of his family, initially studied law and became a lawyer in 1735. In 1737 he went to Paris to study painting with Charles Joseph Natoire . He continued his studies in Rome . After graduating, he worked as a portrait painter. He portrayed members of royal families in the Netherlands and in England from 1743 to 1747 . In 1743 Du Pan married his cousin Marie Gallatin in Geneva. In 1750 he came to Dublin , where he painted the portraits of William Stanhope, 1st Earl of Harrington and John Boyle, 5th Earl of Cork and of Orrey. In 1757 he joined the Petit Conseil , the highest authority in the Geneva government, and ended his artistic activity.

At the instigation of the Geneva philosopher and lawyer Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui, his sons André-Patrick and Jean-Antoine attended the newly founded public drawing school, where they learned the goldsmith's trade. Barthelemy Du Pan became a trustee in 1761 and died two years later.
