Bartholomäus Klinge (* around 1535 in Koblenz ; † December 5, 1610 in Rostock ) was a professor of dialectics and rhetoric as well as law at the University of Rostock .

education and study

Bartholomäus Klinge was born in Koblenz around 1535. In the summer semester of 1554 he moved to the University of Rostock and received his first university degree in 1557. Two years later, Klinge completed his university education with a doctorate.

academic career

After graduating in 1559, Klinge initially received the ducal professorship for logic and rhetoric and probably also took over the teaching position for dialectics at the University of Rostock a year later.

He received his doctorate in 1561 as a Licentiatus juris, and in 1579 he was appointed doctor of law at the university, where he continued his previous position at the Artes Faculty. The death of Laurentius Pankelow made it possible for Klinge to also take over the professorship for institutional law in 1595, after Professors David Chytraeus and Simon Pauli had campaigned for him to be appointed to this position in 1578 .

In addition to his academic work, Klinge also gained importance in the political and administrative field. In 1569 he represented the interests of the University of Rostock in a conflict between the dukes and the city of Rostock and in 1570 became a member of the ducal consistory. His appointment to the ducal church council (1574) and the appointment as assessor at the court and district court (1602) also make clear his close ties to the Mecklenburg dynasty.

His science and teaching were influenced by the generation of scholars influenced by Philipp Melanchthon , whose writings he referred to in class. While he resorted to the speeches of Cicero in rhetoric , in dialectic he mainly processed the summary of the Aristotelian writings into logic. Numerous dedications and writings attest to the high esteem for him among students and colleagues.

Between 1565 and 1595, Klinge was dean of the artistic (philosophical) faculty nine times and of the law faculty in 1607/08, and he was the rector of the university six times.
