Bartholomew Yu Chengti

Bartholomäus Yu Chengti ( Chinese  主教 余 成 悌 ) (born August 17, 1919 , † September 14, 2009 in Yuwang, Shaanxi ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Hanzhong in the central Chinese province of Shaanxi, People's Republic of China . He is considered one of the great figures of the Chinese Church.

Life

Bartholomew Yu Chengti joined at the age of 17 years the seminary and received in October 1949 - during the founding of the People's Republic of China - the ordination . A year later he was interned for the first time. In 1981 he was incardinated in the diocese of Hanzhong . In 2003 his resignation due to health reasons was granted.

He died of cancer at the age of 90.

Act

Bartholomew Yu Chengti engaged for romtreue underground church and sat down for the internal unity of the Roman Catholic Church in China one. He was bishop of the diocese of Hanzhong founded in 1887 (suffragan of the archdiocese of Xi'an ), which has been vacant since the death of the last official bishop Joseph Maggi PIME in 1963.

He was repeatedly subjected to reprisals by the authorities and was imprisoned or placed under house arrest. He always refused to join the Chinese Catholic Patriotic State Association .
