Paul Lawrence Bartoli is an examining magistrate in Aix-en-Provence . With charm, sometimes idiosyncratic and disrespectful methods but also meticulous devotion, he investigates two cases in parallel for each episode that were left to him by his ineffective predecessor. He is supported by the clerk Carole Marchant, the temporary archivist Nadia Martinez, the disgraced ex-policeman Jean-Marie Olmeta and the poker-addicted policeman François Cappa.
