Bartolomé de Medina (* 1527 or 1528 in Medina de Ríoseco , Spain , † December 29, 1580 in Salamanca ) was a Spanish Dominican . From 1546 he taught theology in Salamanca. As a student of Francisco de Vitoria , he became a member of the so-called School of Salamanca and was long considered the father of the doctrine of probabilism , a moral theological concept that basically allows what good reasons speak for, even if there are possibly even better arguments for a different behavior . This view, which ascribes “good will” and the underlying intention to a decisive role, was mainly taken up by the Jesuits .

De Medina's other work is mainly concerned with the Summa theologiae of his confrere, St. Thomas Aquinas .
