Bartolomé de Torres Naharro (* 1485 in Torre de Miguel Sesmero , Badajoz Province ; † 1530 ) was a Spanish poet and playwright .

Life

Torres Naharro was both a soldier and a priest. Torres Naharro was captured by the Moorish ( Algiers ). After his ordination in Rome, he entered the service of Cardinal Giulio de 'Medici, the future Pope Clement VII , at whose court most of his works were created. His collection of seven plays, "Propalladia", appeared in Naples in 1517 with a foreword in which he laid down his views on the various genres of drama . The best-known play, "Himenea", is considered the first Spanish drama in which the question of honor is dealt with. His pieces are rich in expression and contain many obscene passages. The cosmopolitan spirit of the High Renaissance speaks from them . Torres Naharro thus becomes the forerunner of the Golden Age of Spanish drama in the late 16th century. He also left poems that sing about the glory of the fatherland and love. His works were put on the index in 1559 and banned. They appeared in "purified" form in 1573.
