Bartolomeo Facio
Bartolomeo Facio , Latin Bartholomaeus Facius (* around 1400 in La Spezia , † 1457 in Naples ) was an Italian humanist and astrologer .
Life
As a student of Guarino da Verona, Facio worked as a tutor in Venice , Florence and Genoa . In 1444 he went to Naples in the diplomatic service of Genoa , where he became secretary and astrologer to King Alfonso V of Aragon . His history of the reign of Alfonso is one of the main sources for research into Neapolitan culture in the 15th century . In his work De viris illustribus , Facio wrote a collection of short biographies, which he divided into numerous categories: poets, speakers, legal scholars, doctors, doctors, philosophers, theologians, painters, sculptors, well-known citizens, condottiere , kings and princes. The biographies mainly related to people from Italy. However, Facio also wrote short biographies about Flemish painters such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden .
Facio fought a long, bitter fight against Lorenzo Valla , whose historical work on Ferdinand I of Aragon he had criticized.
