The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Milagros ( German  Basilica of Our Lady of the Miracles ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Ágreda in the Spanish province of Soria . The church of the Osma-Soria diocese was built in the 16th century in the Gothic and Renaissance styles .

history

The church, which takes up almost the entire area of the main town square, was built in the middle of the 16th century as part of the old monastery of San Agustín. The monastery was closed in 1836 and temporarily used as a school. The monastery church was then converted into a parish church. The church bears the title of a minor basilica from immemorabili .

description

The Church of Our Lady of the Miracles was built with almost cathedral-like proportions and emphasized the large dimensions of the facade, a strict wall without decoration in strict stone monotony, which only break open on the sides two robust corner pillars, on which two spiers protrude. At the base, the post- Herrera style portal opens , consisting of a semicircular arch, two pairs of pilasters, a classic cornice and a gable divided into niches, which presents a figure of Mary in alabaster.

The church is built on the plan of a Latin cross, with the choir at the foot taking up the first section of the single-nave room, the vault of which is supported by a basket-like arch. The nave consists of three sections that are separated from each other by round arches and, like the crossing , are covered with a star-shaped cross vault . The side chapels are arranged in parallel in front of the transept. The sanctuary closes with a five-sided apse .

Sanctuary

The gilded, baroque high altar consists of a predella , body, eyelashes and two wings. The middle part shows the image of the title patroness, the Virgin of Miracles, in a large central oval, who is shown seated with the child in her arms, a black, gold and multi-colored virgin from the 14th century with late Romanesque references. It is framed by paintings of various sizes and statues by Martin von Tours and Jacob the Elder . On the upper floor there is a beautiful Calvary of excellent stature with paintings depicting Saints Peter and Paul . Next to the altar there are paintings of other apostles on panels on the wall.

Side chapels

On the side opens the Chapel of Carmen, a monumental Renaissance room with a lavish roof of irregular cross-section, adorned with an ornate star vault that illuminates the chapel through two lantern-like windows.

On the side opens the Chapel of St. Peter, which houses a Gothic crucifix known as Christ the Templars and another statue of Peter, along with the papal attributes of the minor basilica. There is also a Romanesque baptismal font here.
