June Knight
June Knight (actually Margaret Rose Valliquietto ; born January 22, 1913 in Los Angeles , California ; † June 16, 1987 there ) was an American actress , singer and dancer who achieved fame in both Hollywood and Broadway . In 1935 she became the first interpreter of the song Begin the Beguine .
Life
June Knight was in poor physical condition during the first few years of her life. She developed tuberculosis at the age of four and was unable to walk until she was five due to poliomyelitis . After Knight's health improved, she made her first dance and singing appearances at the age of ten.
June Knight's professional career began in 1930 as the dance partner of the dancer John Holland. In doing so, she also adopted her stage name, which Holland's former partner had previously carried. At 19, Knight appeared on the Ziegfeld Follies- produced show Hot-Cha! on New York Broadway. More shows and musicals followed. Among other things, she sang in the premiere of Jubilee in 1935 as the first interpreter the piece Begin the Beguine , which later became famous in the versions of many well-known music stars such as Fred Astaire , Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra .
Knight played her first small film role in Madam Satan in 1930 . By 1940, 11 more film appearances followed. Among her best-known roles include the the Lillian Brent in the musical film Broadway Melody of 1936 , in which she and her co-star Robert Taylor , the piece I've Got a Feelin 'You're Foolin sings. Her appearance as Grace Gatwick in the comedy Daring Game from 1938 also gained fame. Then Knight ended her film career after only ten years. She remained active as a singer and theater actress until 1947.
June Knight has been married four times. The first two marriages were divorced, her third husband Carl B. Squier died in 1967. Her fourth marriage to Jack Buehler lasted from 1969 until her death. June Knight died of a stroke on June 16, 1987 at the age of 74 in her hometown of Los Angeles. She was buried in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.
For her services to the film industry, June Knight received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6247 Hollywood Boulevard.
