Karl Julius Riedel (born August 9, 1817 in Berlin , † May 5, 1882 in Frankfurt an der Oder ) was a royal Prussian major general and most recently inspector of the 4th engineer inspection.

His parents were the pharmacist Johann Daniel Riedel and his wife Juliane Dorothea Enderwitz .

Life

He received his education at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Berlin . Then he went on October 1, 1834 as a pioneer in the Guard Pioneer Department . From October 1, 1835 to September 30, 1838 he was posted to the United Artillery and Engineering School . During this time he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on September 23, 1836 and on October 3, 1837 aggregated as a second lieutenant in the 1st engineer inspection .

On October 1, 1838, he returned to the Guards Pioneer Department and was assigned there on December 30, 1841. On October 22, 1843, he came to fortification services in the Küstrin Fortress , but left on March 28, 1844.

On July 1, 1845, with a patent on October 3, 1838, he was reinstated in the first engineer inspection and sent to fortification services in the Settin fortress . From there he came to the 2nd Fortress Inspectorate as an adjutant in 1848, was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on July 24, 1849 and to captain on June 22, 1852. On July 20, 1852, he was transferred to the 1st Company of the 2nd Engineer Division as a commander. On April 30, 1857, he came to the fortress of Königsberg for fortification work and on June 5, 1858, as fortress construction director in Swinoujscie . There he was promoted to major on November 5, 1861, before he was transferred as an engineer officer from the square to the Thorn fortress on July 1, 1862 and to the Glatz fortress on May 5, 1866 . There he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 20, 1866 and transferred back to Thorn on July 18, 1867. On July 4, 1868, he was transferred to the 4th Engineer Inspection as an inspector and made a member of the Engineer Commission. On July 23, 1868 he was promoted to colonel with a patent on July 3, 1868. Shortly thereafter - on August 9, 1868 - he also became a member of the examination board for captains and premier lieutenants of the engineering corps.

During the Franco-Prussian War , on November 3, 1870, he was entrusted with the management of the attack work in front of Verdun, on November 18, 1870, he was appointed engineer and chief for the siege of Diedenhofen and on December 24, 1870 in the same position for the siege by Mezieres. After the surrender of the fortress, he was entrusted with the management of the commander of Mézières on January 2, 1871. In the same year he received the Iron Cross 2nd class . On April 25, 1871, he returned to his peace position.

On January 18, 1873, he received the Red Eagle Order, 3rd class with ribbon, and on March 22, 1873, the character of Major General. But on April 12, 1873, due to illness, he was put up for a pension and died on May 5, 1882 in Frankfurt an der Oder.

Riedel married Pauline Wilhelmine Türke on November 30, 1844 in Berlin (* April 9, 1821 - March 2, 1858), a daughter of the private teacher Johannes August Türke .
