Basil Cochrane Newton
Sir Basil Cochrane Newton KCMG (born July 25, 1889 - † 1965 ) was a British diplomat .
Newton studied at King's College , Cambridge and entered the foreign service in 1912. From 1927 to 1929 he was employed in Beijing , from 1930 he was counselor in Berlin , where he served from March 1, 1935 to 1936 with the rank of envoy as chargé d'affaires. From March 1937 to 1939 he was envoy in Prague , among other things during the Sudeten crisis . After the German occupation in March 1939, he left the country and was transferred to Baghdad . He was ambassador to Baghdad from May 3, 1939 to 1941 and was replaced shortly after the start of the military coup in April 1941. He later worked in the Legal Department of the Foreign Office .
