Basileios Peteinos ( Middle Greek Βασίλειος Πετεινός ; † after March 961 on Prokonnisos ) was a Byzantine aristocrat and conspirator against Emperor Romanos II.

Life

Basil Peteinos was a childhood friend of Constantine VII , whom he supported in 944/945 in the power struggle against his brothers-in-law Stephanos and Konstantin Lakapenos . In gratitude for his loyalty, he was awarded the high dignity of patrician and magisterium . In March 961, Basil was the head of a large-scale conspiracy against Constantine's son and successor Romanus II , in which, according to Skylitzes, several high dignitaries were involved. The rebels planned to attack the emperor on the day of the chariot races in Constantinople and to proclaim Basil in the hippodrome to be the basileus . The conspiracy, however, was betrayed by co-conspirator Johannikios a day before the date . The Imperial Hofvorsteher Joseph Bringas ordered the arrest of Basil, perform publicly through the city, the monk scissors and the island Prokonnisos in the Sea of Marmara banish, where he died in mental derangement. The other conspirators were tortured and also banished, but Romanos II pardoned them a little later.
