history
The first church in Tayabas was built in 1585, it was made of wood with a roof made of nipapalm leaves and was consecrated to the Archangel Michael . After damage and reconstruction in 1590, it was decided in 1600 to build a stone church. This was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1743 and a few years later rebuilt larger than before in its present form. At the beginning of the 19th century, the church was fitted with the first church clock in Asia . This has a diameter of about 1.50 meters, its weights are 70 kilograms. The roof structure, originally made from roof tiles, was reinforced in 1894 by a more resistant metal substructure. Pope John Paul II awarded St. Michael's Church the title of a minor basilica on January 21, 1989 . Extensive restoration work has been carried out in the church since 2000.
