The Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Merced ( German  Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy ) is a Roman Catholic church in the provincial capital of Cordoba , Argentina . The former monastery church of the Mercedarians was consecrated to Mary , the Mother of God , under the invocation of Mary from the ransom of the prisoners . The church of the Archdiocese of Cordoba bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church goes back to the adjoining Mercedarian Monastery of St. Laurentius, which was approved in 1601. The convent of San Lorenzo Martir was the formation house of the order, where a large number of priests came together. At that time the Basilica of Mercy became, in the words of the Bishops of Cordoba, “the confessional of Cordoba”.

Today's basilica was also built as a monastery church. For this third building, the main facade was finally completed in 1869 as the work of the Italian architects Bettoli and Kanepa. The church was founded in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica .

Building

In eclecticism , various historicizing styles such as Italian classicism with references to Roman basilicas and German spiers were brought together. The three-aisled church with a transept has the shape of a basilica . The rows of columns to the side aisles with their side altars are rectangular and massive. The long choir ends with a three-sided apse . The colorfully decorated barrel vault of the main nave opens with stitch caps to the windows of the upper aisle . The crossing dome rises above a drum . Much is clad like marble.

From the previous churches , the baroque pulpit from 1776 has been preserved, the wealth of which in Argentina is only surpassed by the cathedral church of Jujuy, as well as the altar from the late 18th century and the ornate main portal made of Paraguayan cedar wood.
