The Visitation Basilica is a Roman Catholic church in Staré Hory , Slovakia . The church of the diocese of Banska Bystrica is under the patronage of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary consecrated. It has been a national cultural monument of Slovakia since 1963 .

history

The church was built in the Gothic style between 1448 and 1499 . The three-aisled church closes with a polygonal apse on the choir , in which the Gothic vault has been preserved. Other parts of the church were baroque in 1722 and redesigned in 1850 in classicism. The tower of the church is finished with a baroque helmet with a lantern. Its porch is covered with a tympanum and a triangular gable. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica in 1990. 40 priests and 11,000 believers took part in the pontifical office for the Annunciation.

Furnishing

The church has a valuable Rococo pulpit and a statue of the Madonna from the 16th century. This was buried in front of the Protestants in the 17th century as part of the religious conflicts and only put up again in the church in 1711. Today there is a Marian monument on the site.
