The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary ( Polish Bazylika Nawiedzenia Najświętszej Marii Panny ) is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in Wambierzyce ( German  Albendorf ), Poland . The church of the Archdiocese of Wroclaw is dedicated to the Virgin Mary invoking the Visitation of the Virgin Mary . The baroque basilica was built between 1715 and 1723. It bears the title of a minor basilica and is protected as a cultural monument.

history

Today's basilica is located on a hill on which a wooden statue of the Virgin stood in the twelfth century. According to a chronicle from 1218, blind Jan regained his eyesight there. Afterwards, many pilgrims came here, and soon an altar was erected next to a baptismal font. In 1263 a wooden church was built on the hill. After its destruction in the Hussite Wars , Ludwig von Pannwitz had a larger brick church built, which was consecrated in 1512. However, this church was destroyed during the Thirty Years War . In 1695, Daniel Paschasius von Osterberg began building a three-aisled basilica based on the ideas of the Herodian temple to promote the place of pilgrimage . This was consecrated in 1710, but did not last due to construction defects. After his traditional journeys to Jerusalem, Osterberg built a calvary with 45 chapels and sculptures today, from which the name “Silesian Jerusalem” for Alberndorf goes back.

After the dilapidated previous building had been demolished, the present church was built between 1715 and 1723 by Count Franz Anton von Götzen . In 1936 Pope Pius XI awarded the church has the rank of a minor basilica. In August 1987, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński performed a canonical coronation of the Virgin Mary, who has since been venerated as Queen of the Families .

architecture

The 54-meter-wide renaissance facade rises above a wide flight of stairs with 33 steps, which represent the years of Jesus' life. The show facade can be illuminated with around 1300 lamps in the evening. The church is designed as a central building on eight mighty pillars on an oval floor plan. In the chapel of grace shows the baroque high altar with the hll. Anna and Joachim on the gates the portrait of Mary dated 1380, a 28 centimeter high statue made of limewood.

Likewise, the Vienna-based sculptor Karl Sebastian Flacker created two splendid Baroque altars in the main nave for Antonius of Padua and Johannes Nepomuk as well as the Magnificat pulpit with the figure of Mary and the crown with personifications of the four continents. The ceiling painting by J. Bonora depicts the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Numerous votive offerings represent the answers to prayer.
