Maria Trost Basilica (Táriba)
The Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation ( Spanish Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación ) is a Roman Catholic church in Táriba in the Venezuelan state of Táchira . The church in the diocese of San Cristóbal de Venezuela is dedicated to the invocation of the comforter of the afflicted to the Blessed Mother Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .
history
Augustinian monks came from nearby San Cristóbal in 1560 and carried an image of Our Lady of Consolation to Táriba. In 1600 a hermitage was built for her worship, which continues to this day. The hermitage developed into a monastery for the growing community and for the care of the pilgrims. In 1690 the construction of the first church began.
Today's church at Plaza Bolivar is dedicated to Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted, the patroness of the state of Táchira. Pope John XXIII awarded the church the title of minor basilica in 1959. The basilica was last rebuilt in the 1960s.
architecture
The facade is divided into three floors. In the lower one, the three entrance doors are framed by two columns each. On the next floor, four pillars support the triangular gable above, with a statue of Mary in the middle. The facade is framed by two four-story bell towers .
The church is a three-aisled hall church , the wider central nave of which is separated from the side aisles by rows of columns. The round columns each carry the barrel vault . The aisles are fitted with rows of stained glass windows. The chancel is separated from the nave by a triumphal arch and is illuminated by a dome above it. The statue of Mary Comforter of the Afflicted stands in a modern reredos.
