The Basilica Nossa Senhora da Penha ( German  Basilica of Our Lady of the Rock ) is a parish church in Recife , capital of the Brazilian province of Pernambuco . The church of the Capuchin Monastery in the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife was the first of the order in Brazil and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church in the São Jose district goes back to the Fora de Porta de Santo Antônio oratory , which was founded in 1655 by French Capuchin monks after the expulsion of the Dutch . The Marian title Nossa Senhora da Penha (de França) comes from a miraculous image on Mount Peña de Francia in the Spanish Sierra de Francia . The current church was built by Capuchins from Venice between 1870 and 1882. The model for the building was the classicist basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Pope Pius XII elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1949. Extensive restorations took place between 2007 and 2014.

Traditionally, the Basilica of Penha gathers large numbers of believers on Fridays when the Capuchins give the blessing of St. Felix , a canonized Capuchin brother, throughout the day .

Building

The three-aisled basilica in the neo-renaissance style has a cruciform floor plan with an important crossing dome over a drum . There are tall bell towers on the side of the choir.

In addition to a bas-relief, the main altar has figures of Francis of Assisi and Antonius of Padua carved out of marble by Valentino Besarel , the Italian sculptor also includes other works of art in the church. Some of the frescoes are by the Brazilian Murillo La Greca, the origin of many other works of art is not documented.
