Cloister of the Basilica of San Isodoro in Léon

The national shrine has been the burial place of Saint Isidore of Seville since 1063 , Archbishop of Seville in the 7th century and the most important Visigothic Doctor of the Church. Because of the unique ceiling paintings, the Panteón real, the royal burial chamber, is also known as the “Romanesque Sistine Chapel”. The paintings, unprecedented in execution and condition, give a vivid insight into the world of images and everyday life in the 12th century. Biblical and everyday scenes, such as a series of monthly pictures, are shown in great splendor . In the church museum, valuable pieces of the treasury are exhibited, such as the reliquary of St. Isidore from the 11th century.

Chalice of the Doña Urraca

Chalice of the Doña Urraca

In March 2014, the art historian Jose Manuel Ortega del Rio and the historian Margarita Torres published a book in which they set up the theory that the upper part of the 11th-century agate goblet of the Doña Urraca, also on display in the museum, was originally the bowl from who drank Jesus of Nazareth at his last supper , the chalice should therefore be regarded as the Holy Grail . The thesis that the chalice is the Holy Grail contradicted, among others, the church historian Diarmaid MacCulloch . There are around 200 properties in Europe alone, and this is also being claimed.

The rush of visitors following the publication of Jose Manuel Ortega del Rio and Margarita Torres went beyond the scope of the museum. Therefore, the management decided after a few days not to show the goblet until a more suitable place for the presentation was found. The chalice is now in a room on the upper floor of the museum and can be viewed there as part of a guided tour.
