The Santa Teresa Basilica ( Spanish Basílica de Santa Teresa ) is a Roman Catholic church in Caracas , Venezuela . The Basilica minor belonging to the Archdiocese of Caracas is dedicated to Teresa of Avila and St. Anne . The building is protected as a cultural asset of national importance . The statue of the "Nazarene of San Pablo" is venerated in the basilica.

history

The President Antonio Guzmán Blanco ordered the demolition of several churches in Caracas for various new public buildings. Instead of the former church of St. Philippo Neri , a monumental new church was built. In 1870 the architect Juan Hurtado Manrique was commissioned with the project, the construction of the church began in 1877 and ended in 1881. In honor of the first wife Doña Ana Teresa, a devout Catholic, the church of Santa Teresa was consecrated on October 28 of the same year. On December 9, 1959, it was declared a National Historic Monument. Pope Paul VI raised the church to the rank of minor basilica in 1974.

The classical church has two large portals. The west facade is dedicated to St. Anna , the eastern part to St. Teresa. Both lead through the central nave to the central high altar with canopy under the crossing dome .

Statue of the Nazarene

The wooden statue of the " Nazarene of San Pablo" is a sculpture from the 17th century, which is attributed to the sculptor Felipe de Ribas from Seville. Depicted is Jesus Christ carrying the cross on the seventh station of the cross . The sculpture is carried through the city in a three to four hour procession on Good Friday .
