Basilica of St. Agatha and Barbara
The Basilica of St. Agatha and Barbara ( Dutch Basiliek van de Heiligen Agatha en Barbara ) is a Roman Catholic basilica in the Dutch town of Oudenbosch in North Brabant . It was built by the architects Pierre Cuypers and GJ van Swaay as a quadruple copy of St. Peter's Basilica with the front of the Lateran Basilica .
history
It was built on the initiative of Willem Hellemons, who was pastor of the parish between 1842 and 1884 , inspired by his long stay in Rome.
After breaking ground in 1865, the construction was mainly from 1867 to 1880. Before the main facade of the church is the Zouaves -Monument of Leo Stracke from 1911 by Pope Pius IX. shows.
In 1912, Pope Pius X made the church the second Dutch house of worship to be a basilica minor .
construction
The basilica is 81 meters long, 55 m wide and the dome is 63 meters high at its highest point, with a diameter of 20 meters at a height of 51 meters.
In its classic Italian style, the church building is atypical for northern Europe and also unusual in its size for a small town in North Brabant.
organ
The organ of Christian Ludwig King dates back to 1773 and was converted to an electro-pneumatic system 1,941th In 1975 a renovation took place.
