The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace and Concord ( French Basilique Notre-Dame de Paix et de Concorde ) or Basilica of Basse-Wavre is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Wavre in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant . The minor basilica of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels is a former priory church and a listed building.

history

The church goes back to a chapel in Basse-Wavre, where the Affligem Abbey with the permission of Heinrich III. of lion and his brother Gottfried VI. founded a Benedictine priory before 1105. The church consists of construction phases from the 12th to the 18th century. The monastery complex was closed in 1797 and is now home to educational facilities of the Collège Notre-Dame.

The statue of Notre-Dame de Basse-Wavre was made by Pope Leo XIII on June 26, 1897 . solemnly crowned by Cardinal Pierre-Lambert Goossens on September 8th . The church was listed as a historical monument by royal decree of March 8, 1938 . In December 1999 Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of minor basilica.

architecture

The church in the shape of a basilica stands in the south of the former monastery complex. The Gothic choir dates from the 16th century, the three-aisled nave from the 17th century. The brick and bluestone tower with an onion dome top was completed in 1710. The Marienkapelle as a preserved part of the previous church originates from the 12th century and is accessible through an elegant wrought iron gate in the style of Louis quatorze as an extension of the left aisle.

Furnishing

In the Lady Chapel are the statue of Notre-Dame de Basse-Wavre, a statue of the Virgin and Child by Farcy Faydherbe from 1642, and the reliquary. After parts of the interior of the church, such as the reliquary chest from 1152, were lost to the iconoclasts in 1590 by fire, the Archbishop of Mechelen, Jacobus Boonen , donated a shrine to replace it. On the copper-hammered and gilded work of art, the sides are adorned with medallions depicting the legend of the Marse de Basse-Wavre . Today it is still the subject of an annual Le Grand Tour procession that traverses the region on a 7.5 km path. The church has old stained glass windows .
