The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe ( Spanish Basílica Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe or Basílica de Guadalupe ) is a church in Santa Fe , capital of the Argentine province of the same name . The parish and pilgrimage church of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz has the rank of a minor basilica . The Plaza Rosedal opens in front of it, where the great pilgrimage masses take place 15 days after Easter.

history

In 1747 a Mercedarian priest, Father Miguel Sánchez, found a picture in the library of the Mercedarian monastery depicting the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Saint Juan Diego in Mexico. This picture was then hung in the oratory of the Setúbal family three miles outside of Santa Fe. In 1780 the Setubal family built a larger chapel to replace the oratory near by, which was in danger of decay, and it was decorated with an altarpiece carved by the nephew Francisco Javier de la Rosa, around which numerous oil medallions were attached to the apparition of Mary.

In 1899 Pope Leo XIII proclaimed . the Virgin of Guadalupe as patron saint and head of the diocese of Santa Fe. On October 14, 1900, the first official procession took place on the initiative of Juan Águstin Boneo, the first bishop of the diocese.

In 1904, Boneo blessed the cornerstone of the new church. A neo-Gothic church in the style of a basilica was built under the direction of the architect Juan Bautista Arnaldi . It was consecrated on May 8, 1910.

On April 22, 1928, the image of the Virgin Mary after approval by Pope Pius XI. canonically crowned by the apostolic nuncio Filippo Cortesi as part of a pontifical office , numerous bishops took part.

The church was founded in 1953 by Pope Pius XII. raised to the rank of a minor basilica.

inner space

The reredos of the high altar are significant . It was built in Austria and donated to the sanctuary by Bishop Boneo around 1918. It contains the images of Jerome and Rochus of Montpellier , the patrons of the city of Santa Fe . Behind the upper part of the altarpiece is the Camarín , built in 1908 and redesigned in 1932 , which bears an image of the Virgin Mary, which replaced the old image of Father Sánchez at the end of the 19th century. Originally from Spain, it came to Santa Fe from Cuyo and is made of wood. It contains a mechanism for it to turn around and be seen in the altarpiece by church goers. This usually happens during the patron saint's patronage celebrations. The original picture is in the wall niche to the right of the altar in the cloakroom.

The chancel was redesigned in 1968 and is made of white granite that is extracted from the Río Tercero . In the right aisle there are memorial plaques from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and a facsimile of tiles with an inscription by Francisco Javier de la Rosa. On the stairs that lead up to the sacristy, the wall is decorated with a Mexican flag, a gift from Mexican Catholics in the year of the coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
