history
The Oblate brother Jacques Laperriere from Schefferville celebrated at the site of the first mass at Christmas 1959. It took place in a mine garage of the new mine site where in 1961 Labrador City was founded. Theodore Roussel, OMI, became the first pastor in 1960. He directed the construction of the church, which opened in 1962.
At the request of Bishop Peter Alfred Sutton , OMI, Pope Paul VI decreed . 1976 that the church next to the cathedral in Schefferville should become the co- cathedral for the diocese of Labrador City-Schefferville . When Schefferville ceased mining, the episcopal seat was relocated to Labrador City in 1980, raising the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Aid to a cathedral. In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI awarded the cathedral also has the rank of a minor basilica. It was the second basilica in the province and the twenty-first in Canada. Due to the amalgamation of the new Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador, the church lost its cathedral status in the same year. The Church continues to be cared for by the Order of the Oblates.
