Labrador City is a small town ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador near the border with the province of Québec . Labrador City and Wabush are often referred to as twin cities. Wabush owns the only airport in west labrador . The following airlines land there: Air Canada Jazz , Air Labrador and the Provincial Airlines . The city's motto is: "Land Of The Hardworking People".

The population was 7220 in 2016. Five years earlier it was 7367. Labrador City was founded in 1961 to accommodate employees of the Iron Ore Company of Canada .

Economy and Infrastructure

The region has large deposits of iron ore . Accordingly, the city's economy is also shaped by it. Several Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) quarries have been operating in the area under the Carol Project name since the 1960s . The iron ore is transported on the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway (QNSL) to the Sept-Îles loading port on the Saint Lawrence River, 420 km away .

IOC and majority owner Rio Tinto announced an investment project of around $ 800 million in 2010. However, due to the global economic crisis and lower demand for steel, these plans have been temporarily suspended. After the global economic recovery, the companies announced expansion and investment in the projects in the near future. With the start of construction on the new Wabush 3 mine project and the expansion of the Sherwood pit , which was intended to bridge the production bottlenecks until the completion of Wabush 3, the investment projects were continued from 2015 onwards.

The city of Wabush, only 3 miles away, has its own airport. The Wabush Airport is served by several regional airlines with smaller aircraft.

In the city center there is the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help , several shops, restaurants and cafes. The Labrador Mall is the largest mall and has 55 stores.
