The Basilica of the Madonna of the Protective Mantle ( Slovenian Bazilika Marije zavetnice s plaščem ) is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in Ptujska Gora . The church on the market square was built in 1410 and is considered the most beautiful Gothic monument in Slovenia and an important Catholic pilgrimage site in Slovenia.

history

According to a document, Pope Boniface IX. in the last decade of the 14th century (1398) Ulrich IV. von Walsee granted permission to build a church in what was then Maria Neustift, which was built by his nephew Bernhard III. von Pettau was completed in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 15th century.

Decades after its completion, the Turks began threatening the area. The market with the church on a 352 meter high hill was therefore surrounded by fortifications such as the preserved southern defense tower after Turkish looting to protect it from destruction. Maria Neustift had become a military camp, as can be seen on the well-preserved copper plate from 1681.

In 2009 the church was renovated and conserved in preparation for the 600th anniversary. In the course of this anniversary she received a decision by Pope Benedict XVI. of December 8, 2009 as the highlight of the celebrations on May 16, 2010, awarded the title of Basilica minor .

architecture

The Gothic church is a three-nave building with a richly decorated interior.

The bell tower with four bells was redesigned several times, most recently in the baroque era . Large Gothic windows with narrow central mullions and ornate trusses enliven the external appearance of the church, which is particularly diverse on the eastern side and to which three Gothic apses have been added.

Furnishing

The church furnishings include altars and images of saints. It is a treasure trove of Gothic sculpture from the early 15th century.

Protective mantle Madonna

In the center of the baroque main altar is the image of the Madonna in the protective cloak . 82 figures are presented under her mantle, representing an interesting collection of human types from this period. Among them are the figures of the builder Bernhard III. and his wife, two Friars Minor, many representatives of the nobility, clergy and other contemporaries.

The Cyrian altar is located with a canopy in the southern apse. At first it probably stood above the main altar and occupied a central place in the church. After the last renovation of the presbytery, this outstanding sculptural work from Peter Parler's studio found its place again in the church. The rosary altar is on the left side of the church. The work is attributed to the students of Peter Parler and shows the figure of the seated Mother of God with the child. The pulpit is a valuable work of baroque sculpture from the mid-18th century.

A statue of St. Jacob stands on the right side of the church and was originally part of the altar dedicated to him. It is a perfect example of Gothic sculpture and the top work of the Ptujskogór Sculpture Workshop from the early 15th century. A bas-relief by Viktor Gojkovič from 1986 shows Maximilian Kolbe .

Gothic frescoes in the former chapel of the Holy Cross are well preserved. Among other things, they show scenes from the life of Jesus.

The stained glass windows are the work of the Slovenian painter Ida Brišnik-Remec from 1981 and 1982, they illustrate the sun song of St. Francis of Assisi .
