In the crypt , Mercedes de Anchorena was buried, who is said to have said:

"If I live in a palace, my God deserves one too."

description

The basilica was designed based on the inspiration of Angoulême Cathedral in a harmonious mix of styles, including neo-Romanesque forms on the facade, neo-Byzantine elements in the interior with a strong vertical orientation and narrow arches. It has five towers, three above the entrance and two on the sides of the apse. The three-aisled basilica offers space for 1500 people on a cross-shaped floor plan. Your sanctuary is directly connected to the crossing in a seven-sided apse . The crypt, consecrated in 1911, extends over the entire floor plan and is furnished with granite from Germany and chairs from Belgium. The basilica is illuminated with stained glass windows and is decorated with valuable works of art. The altar is decorated with gold and silver applications. The cladding consists of Baveno granite, red marble from Verona and white marble from Carrara, plus chestnut brown onyx from Morocco and blue granite. In addition to the Venetian majolica, there are artistic sculptures made of white marble and wood carvings made by the Wespelaere House in the Belgian city of Bruges.

The organ with five thousand pipes comes from the organ builder Mutin Cavaillé-Coll . It was inaugurated in 1915 with a performance of Widor's Fifth Symphony in the presence of organ builder Charles Mutin .
