Basel Wednesday Society 1907

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basler Wednesday Society 1907 , or BMG for short , is the oldest men's carnival clique in Basel .

founding

The Basler Wednesday Society was founded in December 1907 as an all-male clique of seven drums in the Muffler restaurant on Steinentorstrasse in Basel. Since then she has been taking part in the Basel Carnival every year. She campaigned for the promotion of young talent from an early age and founded Basel's first Young Guard in 1909. The long-time director of her drum school, the drum instructor Joseph Wintzer, developed his own drum notation for the BMG, the hieroglyphs, which are still used today in numerous drum corps.

history

In 1922, the BMG moved into the Löwenzorn restaurant as a regular, where it has been at home ever since, and in the same year it bought the uniforms of the former Basel professional company, the Stänzler . Since the mid-1920s, the BMG was the first carnival society to go drumming and whistling through the city on Carnival Tuesday. The central element of the evening was honoring the dead, the “Ladärnliverbrenne”, a tradition that has been continued to this day and that defines a lot of the essence of the BMG. In 1930 a few members split off from the BMG and founded their own clique, the Basler Bebbi .

The Stänzler are a trademark of BMG. In 1922, the clique purchased these uniforms from the former Basel professional company from the 18th and 19th centuries, with which they are still invited to national and international events and represent Basel. Some of the highlights of their appearances were their participation in the national exhibition in 1939 , the Expo 64 , the Carnaval d'Eté in St-Ouen Paris 1969, the large costume and rifle parade of the Munich Oktoberfest in 1994, 2003, 2010 and 2015 or at the Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart 2006, 2016 and 2017. In 2014 the Stänzler took part in the Steuben Parade on Fifth Avenue in New York , in 2016 in the Gauder Fest in Zillertal and in 2018 in the Sechseläuten parade in Zurich. There are also numerous appearances in Basel, such as the opening of the horticultural exhibition Grün 80 , on official events of the Basel government, as a Basel delegation at various federal shooting festivals and at the 450 and 500 year celebrations of Basel's entry into the Swiss Confederation in 1951 and 2001.

Since it was founded, the BMG has shaped the Basel Carnival with its subjects. Their carnival parades are designed by well-known Basel artists and graphic designers, for example by Burkhard Mangold and Charles Hindenlang in the 1920s and 1930s , by Ferdy Afflerbach in the 1950s, and later by Fredy Prack and Domo Löw.

Wrinkle

In 1967, BMG-Runzle was founded as the old guard of the parent club Basler Wednesday Society. The goal of the BMG-Runzle was and is still today to approach the Carnival a little more calmly, to adapt the Cortège workload to the possibilities of the older Carnival participants and still enjoy the Carnival to the fullest. The Runzle have their own annual and carnival program. The first part of Morgestraich and Fasnacht Tuesday as well as various events during the year are celebrated together with the BMG tribe. As with the tribe, maintaining friendship with one another and good drumming and whistling are at the center of social life with the Runzle.

avant-garde

AvantGARDE was launched in 2016. With this, the BMG responded to the problems that many cliques are confronted with in their youth department. The avantGARDE is aimed at the age group of 14 to 25-year-old men, i.e. precisely the age at which many stop doing Carnival - there are many reasons for this. AvantGARDE organizes itself and has its own annual and carnival program. She takes the freedom she needs and takes part in the events of the tribe and the Runzle that they enjoy - this applies in particular to the Stänzler appearances and excursions.

Association organ

Since the 1970s, the BMG has had its own clique organ, “The Shepherd”, which reports regularly on social life

BMG today

The BMG is still a pure male clique that takes part in the carnival with its parent club, Runzle and avantGARDE. In 2022 she will celebrate 100 years of Stänzler and 100 years as a clique bar in the Löwenzorn restaurant.
