The Bassac ( khm. ទន្លេបាសាក់; Tonle Bassac ) is the largest estuary of the Mekong . The river divides from the Mekong in Phnom Penh , Cambodia , flows south and is from Long Bình to Pak Nam on a short distance of around 10 km border river between Cambodia and Vietnam . In An Thường, around 50 km after Cần Thơ and 35 km before the mouth of the South China Sea in the Mekong Delta , it divides into two further estuary arms, the northeast of which forms the border between the provinces of Trà Vinh and Sóc Trăng .
In Vietnam the river is called Hậu ( Sông Hậu or Hậu Giang ) or "Lower Mekong" (and the actual Mekong Tiền Giang or Sông Tiền , "Upper Mekong").
The Bassac is an important route between Cambodia and Vietnam, used by barges and other watercraft.
The USS Satyr (ARL-23) , a recommissioned repair ship originally built for the United States during World War II , served on the Bassac during the Vietnam War .
The Bassac is spanned by four bridges: the Monivong Bridge in Phnom Penh, the Ta Khmao Bridge in Ta Khmao, the Koh Thom Bridge near Koh Thom, and the Cần-Thơ Bridge , the largest cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia, near Cần Thơ in Vietnam .

The southern Laotian kingdom of Champasak and its capital of the same name on the west bank of the Mekong were also known as Bassac during colonial times , although there is no closer connection to the river.
