The bass saxophone and bass saxophone is a saxophone 's third-deepest position . It is tuned in Bb, less often in C. The double bass saxophone and sub- double bass saxophone are even lower .

This instrument is rarely used as a soloist. It does not appear in the typical saxophone setting of a big band ; the lowest saxophone here is the baritone saxophone . The bass saxophone often took on the bass role in New Orleans jazz (e.g. Adrian Rollini or Coleman Hawkins in "Hop Off" 1927).

On the other hand, it is more common in brass bands , but sometimes also in symphonic concert music and film music . Classical concert music with bass saxophone is z. For example, the Sinfonia domestica by Richard Strauss and the miniature opera “ From today to tomorrow ” by Arnold Schönberg . Uses of the bass saxophone in film music are z. B. in the film " Bee Movie - Das Honigkomplott " by Rupert Gregson-Williams .

The instrument has an outstanding position in the saxophone orchestra, where it is still most frequently used today (e.g. Raschèr Saxophone Quartet ). But it is also occasionally used in jazz (e.g. by Peter Brötzmann , Colin Stetson , Deep Schrott , a quartet of four bass saxophones, or Jan Garbarek's 1970 album Afric Pepperbird ).

Pitch range : As 1 - e 1 . With the so-called "overtones" (see overtones ), however, you can also play in significantly higher registers.
