General

The Braunschweig Bastion was a defensive structure for the Magdeburg Fortress . It was part of the outer enceinte to protect the Krökentores, which is about 250 m southeast . Together with the Cleve and Halberstadt bastions , the remains of the Braunschweig bastion are the only aboveground relics of the baroque fortifications. What has been preserved is a rampart with a casemate, a large stone wall with a large walled-in archway.

history

The Braunschweig Bastion was built between 1720 and 1740 on behalf of the Soldier King Friedrich Wilhelm I as part of the Prussian fortress of Magdeburg. In the course of the reconstruction and the simplification of the defense works around 1800, the Braunschweig Bastion was also redesigned. One wanted to increase the defense power for the looming war. The bastion was expanded in 1816 to include a log house and a powder magazine, and with the introduction of the New Prussian fortress style from 1850, several trusses , casemates and caponiniers were added. In 1888, the entire area of the so-called northern front was abandoned and the Braunschweig bastion was partially demolished in 1890 to make room for the urgently needed urban expansion.

For the 50th anniversary of the Magdeburg Horticultural Association in 1895, the then Magdeburg gardening director Johann Gottlieb Schoch suggested a horticultural exhibition. An area of nine hectares, which also included the area of the former Braunschweig bastion, was acquired and after a year of preparation the exhibition was opened on August 28, 1895. The not yet demolished parts of the Braunschweig Bastion were included in the design of the exhibition complex, so that it is still partially preserved today. After the end of the exhibition, part of the horticultural exhibition complex was redesigned into a public park based on a further design by Johann Gottlieb Schoch, the park on the north front , from 1901 Queen Luise Garden , today Geschwister-Scholl-Park . Numerous villas were built on the edge of the park.

location

The Braunschweig Bastion was located on the so-called northwest front of the Magdeburg fortress, today at the intersection of the streets Walter-Rathenau-Straße and Richard-Wagner-Straße .
