Batepá is a place in the Mé-Zóchi district on the island of São Tomé in the island state of São Tomé and Príncipe . In 2012 there were 775 inhabitants.

geography

The place is at an altitude of approx. 420  m halfway between Trindade and Monte Cafe .

history

On February 3, 1953, the place was the scene of the Batepá massacre of hundreds of native Creoles . The so-called " Forros " were massacred by members of the colonial administration and Portuguese landowners after protesting against labor services. The event led to the independence of the former Portuguese colony and is celebrated every year as the Dia de Mártires da Liberdade .
