Family coat of arms of the medieval Counts of Battenberg

Battenberg , named after the town of the same name on the Eder , was a medieval noble family in Hesse . It went back to Werner I. von Battenberg and Wittgenstein (* around 1150, † 1215) and ruled over the county of Battenberg . After extinction in 1310, the title Graf von Battenberg was vacant.

The Darmstadt Grand Duke Ludwig III. von Hessen and bei Rhein re- created it in 1851 and loaned it to his sister-in-law Julia Hauke , Prince Alexander's morganatic wife , as Countess von Battenberg. From then on, the couple carried this name and thus founded the modern noble family Battenberg as a morganatic sideline of the House of Hesse , which was not related to the medieval family.
