action

Fallada first describes the protest actions of the peasantry , from resistance to forced seizures to demonstrations and bomb attacks. At a demonstration in Altholm (historically: Neumünster) there is a fight for the flag of the rural people's movement , whereby the flag bearer is seriously injured. As a result, the peasantry boycotted the town of Altholm for almost a year, which led to considerable economic and political problems. In this situation two powerful and cunning opponents meet in Altholm, the German national editor Stuff and the social democratic mayor Gareis. Between them acts the powerless and disoriented and only interested in his short-term advantage, the advertiser and auxiliary editor Tredup, who is crushed in the small-town network of relationships and dies.

On the cover of the first edition you can see a powerful male figure designed by Olaf Gulbransson , who shows Mayor Gareis or editor Stuff or farmers' leader Reimers (historically: Claus Heim ).

The novel also describes how Ehrhardt people and Stahlhelm activists endeavor to reinterpret the actions of the rural people movement into their model of a conservative revolution .
