The farmer's bell in Süderstapel

The farmer's bells are bells that were used as signaling instruments in the Stapelholm region and are still a typical village symbol there. They will also Stapelholm bell or Stapelholmer Bauer Bell called.

They are smaller than church bells and are either attached to a fork of a branch or between two wooden stakes.

They were located at a central point of the respective location in order to offer the possibility to sound the alarm under certain conditions. Every villager was entitled to ring the bell in the event of impending need and danger.

These dangers included fire, floods and other natural disasters, but warnings of armed attacks were also possible, such as those of the Dithmarscher , who regularly engaged in skirmishes with their neighbors from the areas north of the Eider .

In other cases they were used by the farmer's bailiff , a village official or a publicly appointed person of trust to call the villagers together for meetings, notices and to get work done.

The operation of the bell was also a symbol of the community leaders .

At the end of the wars between the neighbors, the bells were also used for other tasks, such as the registration of births, baptisms, weddings and funerals.
