The Bauprés Rocks ( Spanish Rocas Bauprés translated Bugsprietfelsen ) are two rocks off the west coast of Graham lands north of the Antarctic Peninsula . They are located in the middle of the southern entrance to the Peltier Canal in the Palmer Archipelago .
They were first mapped during the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903–1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . Their descriptive name, which they received because of their resemblance to a bowsprit , can be found for the first time on an Argentine map from 1952. A Royal Navy hydrographic surveying unit landed on the larger of the two rocks on the first Sunday of Advent in 1956, and the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it Advent Island in 1959 .
