The Bay of Plenty Times is a regional daily newspaper in New Zealand based in Tauranga . It is one of the largest daily newspapers in the country.

history

The Bay of Plenty Times first appeared on September 4, 1872 in a fortnightly edition. Four pages in tabloid format cost three pence at the time . The newspaper was founded by William Bartleet Langbridge (partly also written Bartlett ), who, together with James Mitchell , had had to file for bankruptcy in Wellington a year earlier as a printer.

Over the next 40 years the Bay of Plenty Times changed hands several times. One of its early owners was u. a. Edward Mortimer Edgcumbe , who took over the newspaper in 1875 and held it until 1879. In 1882 he allegedly took over the newspaper again and was also involved in the Tauranga Telegraph , which appeared from 1883 to 1884 in competition with the Bay of Plenty Times . Despite economic difficulties, the Bay of Plenty Times was one of the first New Zealand newspapers to publish photographs. In 1913 the Gifford and Cross families took over the newspaper, as a result of which the paper was facing better economic times. On July 3, 1929, the newspaper was registered as a corporation .

With the construction and opening of the port for export at Mount Maunganui in the early 1950s, the importance of the Bay of Plenty Times also increased . In 1955, the first came rotary engine for use in 1976 and coinciding with the use of the first computer of offset printing . In the same year, a fire destroyed the newspaper's entire archive. Fortunately, the historical editions had previously been saved on microfilms, which can still be viewed today via the Alexander Turnbull Library .

In 1992 Wilson & Horton took over the paper and only four years later the ownership changed again, this time in favor of Independent Newspapers PC from Dublin , which had taken over Wilson & Horton in 1996 . On November 30, 1997, the newspaper was dissolved as a corporation and integrated into the group.

today

Since 1997 the Bay of Plenty Times has belonged to the Australian media group APN News & Media via some company constructions , which will then be the paper of the NZME from January 2015 . Publishing Limited has assigned. The Irish Independent Newspapers Limited , on the market as Independent News & Media since 1999 , owned a 29% stake in APN News & Media in 2014 , making it its largest shareholder and therefore also the largest shareholder in the Bay of Plenty Times .

As of 2013, the newspaper reached a readership of 47,000 with a circulation of 16,133 copies. In 2011, the newspaper had around 100 permanent employees and 250 part-time employees who took care of the distribution of the newspaper in the region. In addition to the headquarters in Tauranga , the sheet has four offices in the cities of Katikati , Te Puke , Waihi and Whangamata .

The Bay of Plenty Times also produces five so-called free community newspapers (free newspapers that are financed through advertising), such as the Bay News , the Te Puke Times , the Katikati Advertiser , the Waihi Leader and the Coastal News .
