The Bayernkurier was a conservative monthly newspaper that appeared for the first time on June 3, 1950 and was published by the Christian Social Union (CSU). The main topics of the paper were economy , politics and culture . Although the Bayernkurier was founded as a party newspaper , it was not a pure membership newspaper , but was freely available and was accordingly also distributed via newspaper kiosks . At the end of May 2019 it was announced that the newspaper would be discontinued. The last issue was published on November 16, 2019.

history

The Bayernkurier first appeared on June 3, 1950. The title made reference to the Bayerischer Kurier , the party newspaper of the Bavarian People's Party during the Weimar period. The founding editor and at the same time first editor-in-chief was Franz Josef Strauss , general secretary and later chairman of the CSU. Between 1957 and 1961 Hanns Seidel was added as a further editor, after whose death Strauss took over sole responsibility again in 1964. The current editor is Markus Söder as CSU party leader.

From 2008 to 2014 Peter Hausmann was editor-in-chief, previously from 2001 to 2008 Peter Schmalz and previously from 1977 to 2001 Wilfried Scharnagl . From February 2015 to May 2018, the former BR presenter Marc Sauber was editor-in-chief of the medium. On June 1, 2018, he handed over this function to his previous deputy, Thomas Röll.

The editorial office of the paper was in the party headquarters of the CSU.

Editorial policy

The Bayernkurier reported primarily from the CSU perspective on current topics and news. Although conceived and founded as a party paper, the newspaper has been trying for years to get rid of the image of the "Kampfblatt" and therefore relied more on background reports and a less aggressive style of writing.

Frequency of publication and circulation

The widespread circulation of the Bayernkurier was 48,195 copies in the first quarter of 2015, when it was last reported to the IVW . This corresponds to a decrease of 102,483 copies or 68 percent compared to 1998. After that, the newspaper stopped reporting the circulation figures to the IVW. The last issue of Bayernkurier was published as a weekly newspaper in May 2015 . At this point in time, the circulation was, according to the company, 20,000 printed copies and 30,000 subscriptions to the online edition . Since then, the paper has appeared as a monthly magazine and daily updated web portal.
