Beate Schneider

Beate Schneider (* 1947 in Fulda ) is a professor of communication- and media studies at the Institute of Journalism and Communication Research of the Hochschule für Musik . She founded the institute together with Klaus Schönbach . From 1993 to 1997 and since July 2010 she has been Vice President of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. From 1995 to 2002 and from February 2009 to June 2010 she was director of the Institute for Journalism and Communication Research .

She studied journalism , political science and history at the Universities of Mainz, Frankfurt and Tucson / Arizona and received her doctorate in 1973. From 1973 to 1977 she was a research assistant in the planning staff of the University of Hamburg. From 1977 to 1985 she was a research assistant and university assistant at the Institute for International Politics at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg. From 1985 to 1993 she was then professor for journalism with a focus on comparative media studies in the supplementary course in journalism until she became professor for media studies at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Research in 1993 .

Her academic work focuses on the development of the media and journalism in the former GDR . Research and teaching concentrate on national and international media systems and the analysis of media offers and their production.

Until 2004 she was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Agency for Political Education . Until 2008 she was a member of the television council of the Second German Television ( ZDF ) and deputy chairwoman of the board of trustees of the University of Erfurt. She is a member of the advisory board of Initiative D21 and of the board of trustees for the “ Theodor Wolff Prize ”. She is also a member of the program advisory board of Hitradio Antenne Niedersachsen, the expert advisory board of nordmedia, a deputy member of the board of directors of Deutsche Welle and the scientific advisory board of the magazine “Die Politische Demokratie”, as well as curator of the Heitland Foundation .
