Beatrice Hastings (born May 12, 1879 in London , † October 30, 1943 in Worthing ; actually Emily Alice Haigh ) was a British poet , journalist and art critic .

Life

Beatrice Hastings was the daughter of landowner William Haigh and grew up in South Africa . In 1896 she attended for three years the Queen's College in Oxford to literature study.

Hastings later became known primarily for her numerous short stories and, together with her friend Katherine Mansfield, coined a new form of "essay writing" at the beginning of the 20th century . She had a long love affair with Alfred Richard Orage (1873–1934), editor of the English newspaper The New Age .

Before the outbreak of World War I , Hastings traveled to France , where she wrote about social life in Paris as a columnist for The New Age . Through her friend and artist Max Jacob , Hastings was accepted into the Paris bohemian circle and lived in the bohemian district of Montparnasse . In June 1914 she met the Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920), with whom she had a love affair for two years. She was his model for several pictures, fourteen of which are portraits and nudes that have survived to this day. During the turbulent relationship with her, Modigliani's excessive life intensified. His consumption of alcohol and opium , which he shared with friends Maurice Utrillo and Chaim Soutine , became a hot topic in the press. Modigliani separated from her in 1916 to live with the young art student Jeanne Hébuterne (1898–1920). Shortly thereafter, Beatrice Hastings entered into a tumultuous relationship with Raymond Radiguet (1903-1923).

Beatrice Hastings committed suicide on September 30, 1943 after doctors diagnosed her with cancer and was buried in Worthing Cemetery, West Sussex .
