Beaucarnea guatemalensis is a species of the genus Beaucarnea in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Izote, Izote macho, Izote real, Red Ponytail Palm".
description
Beaucarnea guatemalensis grows tree-like from 6 to 12 m. It forms a thickened caudex , which merges into a slender trunk. The irregularly arranged branches with the variable, falling linear, bluish to green leaves are 50 to 100 cm long and up to 25 mm wide.
The egg-shaped, panicle inflorescence is 30 to 60 cm high with 20 to 30 cm wide, irregularly arranged branches. The flowers are cream-colored.
The elliptical to egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are up to 15 mm long and 13 to 15 mm wide. The irregularly triangular, smooth seeds measure up to 5 mm in diameter.
Systematics and distribution
Beaucarnea guatemalensis is distributed in Guatemala in xerophyte regions in deciduous forests.
The first description was in 1906 by Joseph Nelson Rose . A synonym is Nolina guatemalensis (Rose) Ciferri & Chiacomini (1950).
Beaucarnea guatemalensis is a member of the Beaucarnea section . It grows in dry, tropical forests. The irregularly branched, slender trees with the caudex thickened at the base are characteristic. The variable, bluish to green falling leaves with the finely roughened leaf surfaces are typical. It is closely related to Beaucarnea pliabilis , but has serrated leaf margins.
Beaucarnea guatemalensis is hardly known.
