Beffroi in Salers, field side

The Beffroi (German belfry ) in Salers , a French commune in the Cantal department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , was built in the 15th century. The city gate has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique since 1929 .

In 1428 King Charles VII allowed the residents of Salers to fortify the city. In addition to the Beffroi, the Porte de la Martille still exists today , and two other city gates were demolished.

It is possible that the Beffroi was built on the foundations of a structure from the 14th century. A round stair tower is attached to the side of the tower on a rectangular floor plan. A pointed arched passage is spanned by a barrel vault that was originally closed by wooden gates. There are still remains of machicolations on the facade . The Beffroi is closed off by a roof with an open iron bell cage.
