Before My Time is a movie song written by J. Ralph for Chasing Ice (2012). The title used for the documentary was sung by Scarlett Johansson . Joshua Bell played the violin .

background

J. Ralph wrote the score for the documentary Chasing Ice . When he finished it, he realized that it was a difficult subject that should be thought-provoking in the audience. He therefore wanted a sparsely orchestrated piece for the end credits that would allow the audience to reflect on what they saw. As usual, he did not introduce the piece to actress Scarlett Johansson, a good friend of his, until the piece was finished. The recording was made in J. Ralph's theater on the Lower East Side of New York. The two tried out a few pitches until the piece was sung in about 30 minutes. It was J. Ralph's concern to combine Johannson's deep, scratchy voice with Joshua Bell's violin playing to create a dichotomy .

The song was released on January 1, 2012 as part of the soundtrack for the film via Universal Music .

"Before My Time" is also the title of the first song of Controversial Suite by Duke Ellington .

reception

The song was at the Oscar ceremony in 2013 as Best Song nomination, but was defeated by Skyfall by Adele from James Bond 007: Skyfall . The song was not performed live at the ceremony itself. It is the third song from a documentary that was ever nominated for an Oscar. The first was Riz Ortolani's More from the forefather of all Mondo films Mondo Cane (1963) and I Need to Wake Up by Melissa Etheridge from An Inconvenient Truth (2005).
