Chasing Ice is an American documentary film from 2012. It portrays the work of nature photographer James Balog , who visually documented increasing glacier retreat as a result of global warming as part of his Extreme Ice Survey project . Directed by Jeff Orlowski.

The film includes, among other things, excerpts from the longest video recording of a calving glacier to date . The calving of the Ilulissat Glacier in West Greenland took 75 minutes and resulted in the glacier retreating about one mile over a width of about three miles.

reception

Chasing ice

"... shows pictures that are unforgettable, full of beauty and horror." "The pictures also show how rapidly the ice is melting. [...] They make it possible to understand with the senses what is only talked about at climate conferences. "

- Andreas Lueg : NDR culture journal

“... differs from most of the cinema's attempts to save the world from the climate catastrophe. [...] But “Chasing Ice” doesn't draw its power of persuasion from science, but from art - from the immense power of its images. [...] The pictures are breathtaking, somehow naturally beautiful - and oppressive. "

- Susan Vahabzadeh : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“... Balog's recordings of the Extreme Ice Survey could develop a historical significance for the public perception that is similar to that of Keeling's measurements for science. [...] The important thing about this film [...] is that it succeeds in the difficult trick of making climate change a good part of the audience's experience and empathy. The film also makes one more emotionally aware of the geological changes we are currently experiencing and causing. This is Balog's declared hope: that we will realize this just in time. If you want to continue pretending that we don't have an urgent problem, you shouldn't watch this film. Everyone else - especially people who have children or political responsibilities - should know him. "

“... The consequences of global warming have never been staged in such an artistic and disturbing way. [...] Orlowski shot a scientific documentary with Chasing Ice that never accusations loudly. Researchers, James Balog and his team in particular have their say. The facts are as they are, the time-lapse photos don't lie. [...] Balog's message is clear: We know what's going on out there. "

- Sven Stockrahm : The time
